Derek Pugh President
2025-26 President’s Message

The International Rotary Presidents annual ‘message’ in 2025-26 is “Unite for Good” International Rotary encourages us to tell our Rotary stories in an effective, compelling way all while making sure we all use consistent and unified messaging that is consistent with all of Rotary.  If we do that, the RI message Unite for Good, hopes to inspire members, and the public with a call on all of us to work together in alignment with the Rotary Action Plan.

Rotary has a global impact. When we act locally and provide support and sponsorship for local community events or organisations, it is ‘global’ in the sense that every club in the world is undertaking similar ‘local’ projects. And through the Rotary Foundation we are acting more literally globally.

For example, the fight against polio is an effort from RI (and other organisations) across the whole planet – it’s a cause we will continue to support, and proudly so. The aim is a world without polio, and it will probably be reached in our lifetime. Our club continues to support the PolioPlus fund. We also to support local sport, men’s health, the community of Belyuen, youth exchanges and activities, Timor Leste projects, and many other projects that fit within our charter.

We are proud to celebrate Rotary’s successes. We want people to understand who we are and what we do in the hope that we can inspire them to join us. Our club stands at 44 members and it’s true, we are an aging club. We need to lower our average age, so we are actively recruiting active men in their forties and fifties, who could have a potential 30-40 years of active Rotary membership and service ahead. Only then can we ensure the on-going health of the club and our continued positive effects of our local and international actions.

Our individual participation in local projects is commendable. There are always volunteers for every event we hold. We need to maintain this. It is beholden on all of us to ensure that they are not always the same hands. When members can make a contribution, they make sure they do. In this way our club remains strong and helps Rotary to make lasting changes.

The 2025-26 year is an Art Sale and Auction. This has now already taken place and was a high-profile event right in the middle of the city. The proceeds will provide students of art studying a CDU scholarship to help them through their studies.

Following that, RCD ran the chocolate wheel at the Darwin Show. This is an annual event that helps us raise the funds necessary for our ongoing commitments in sports, community development, youth exchanges and many other things.

In November, we run the “Bali Vibe”, a community event in the early wet season, that is a fun Indonesian inspired festival for all the family, on the beach in front of the Darwin Surf Club.

Come May 2026, we take on one of our biggest projects yet, supporting the Annual International Golfing Fellowship of Rotarians (IGFR) Tournament being held at the Darwin Golf Club over six days. Darwin hasn’t conducted this event locally since 2012 and it will be a whole of club occasion that includes multiple activities and functions.

These are big events, and we need everyone’s help.
